SPARKLY SIXES MATCH REPORT: SEASON 09/10
Saturday 5th December
Wanderer’s L6’s v Kings & Alleyns L2’s
9.30 Friendly Push Back
S&C High School
---------------------------------------
A cold, frosty winter’s morning, with the sunlight flickering through the leafless trees, set the Ladies 6’s off to a sharp start and warm up at 9am. Miss Cooper was feeling slightly worse for wear after a crazy teacher’s night out, Miss McCartney (GK) having had more than her one G&T on a Friday night and Miss Blewett (DOD) taking the ‘friendly’ match as a reason to pull on her new, sparkly, superdry hoodie instead of the Wanderer’s uniform. Has it been washed yet?
Sadly there were not as many supporters on the side line as normal, partly due to such an early push back, but Miss Dickson did bring the Wanderer’s mascots.
Team Captain, Miss Giles, made us aware of how to play a ‘friendly’ match. Imagine they are another team from our club and honesty is required as there is only one umpire.
In the first 10 minutes of play, there were signs of the true L6’s skill and some clever, sparkly hockey. After a few attempts at goal by the hero’s and rockets, frustration started to kick in as it just wasn’t going our way. The rocks and eyes at the back were pushing up the pitch, with the ball barely going over the half way line.
By half time, there was still no score and Miss Giles gave us a very constructive chat, reminding us about how important the meat is in the middle and to keep possession. Sadly Miss Mitchell forgot half time treats, but looking back on it, I think it worked out for the best. A big, ‘One, two, three, Wanderers!’ started off the second half and the rest was just pure fantastic play. The meat, consisting of a variety of combinations with Miss Harvey, Miss Harris, Miss Giles and Miss Dickson were running non-stop and using the rockets and rocks to support them. Miss Bishop played extremely well as sweeper in the last quarter, maintaining the structure of play and intercepting well.
An injury held up play for a few minutes, with Miss Cooper being the doctor and memories of Miss Aldridge’s nose from the last time we played on the ‘beach-like’ pitch.
Short Corners… Not sure where to start on this subject, but there were a rather large number of them, with only one being converted into a goal! Final Whistle, 4-0. Goals being scored by Miss Blewitt, Miss Giles, Miss Aldridge and Miss Dickson.
Poor Miss McCartney didn’t touch the ball all match and was a little chilly down the far end, with alcohol sweats creeping up on her. Quite a few players were nominated for DOD: Miss Spurgeon for leaving the match early to try on Wedding dresses, Miss Spelman – why not, Miss Cooper for looking so horrendous and hungover, Miss Mogford, I wont disclose the reasons yet, as I’m sure she will find out in due course, but Miss Blewitt strided past them all with the orange glow of her legs - I’m sure she wasn’t in Goa with Miss Goodwill…
A night out in Gj’s to celebrate Harvey’s Birthday was the organised event for the evening.
