SPARKLY SIXES MATCH REPORT: SEASON 09/10
Saturday 7th November
Time: Very early in the morning
Location: top secret hide-away in the depths of Surrey
---------------------------------------
With the sun shining down on us and a glorious view over the downs towards central London stretching out below the pitches, an almighty squad of 16-super-star-sixes warmed up and were raring to go for the match with Purley Walcountians (no idea what that means or if it is spelt right!) A few weeks of underperforming slightly had left us with a great motivation to bring back our A game and deliver the win we knew we were capable of! A slightly new look to the team on the day, trialing our sparkly white away kit for the first time…….. it’ll be All White on the night! (ho ho ho)….
The match got off to a slightly nervy start, but despite this, bouts of pressure gave us an early goal against our bumble bee opponents.
This early break immediately changed the dynamics of the game, the sparkly sixes became much more composed as glimmers of our A game returned with composure in passing, simple balls and retaining possession.
Purley had a good goal keeper, which forced us to produce some clever passing in the D to try and out wit her. This effort superbly paid off at a short corner, where quick passing and slipping between Gilo and Steph ensured a very classy goal to add to the tally.
‘On-a-mission-Mitchell’ was out in form to provide the team with not 1, not 2, but three goals, another hatrick (cant spell it as never been applicable to me!) for the goal machine. We do hope that there will be no stopping her!
Further match highlights included a very competitive hawks answering back to the umpire when blown up for a fowl. When asked by the umpire, who had blown up for a tackle from behind, ‘what did you say?!’ a sheepish reply of ‘but I thought that I was in line with her……. (voice trailing off) was Hawks’ second response. A justifiable reason for dick of the day, Hawks was very lucky as this incident was forgotten by some at the time of vote casting!
A fine performance from put in from the long legged one who showed poise and intelligence in her centre forward role, which culminated in a brilliant goal, showing great stick skills in front of the goal: (written reenactment follows). Receives ball in D…stick skills…feet round…ball onto the strong side…stick skills…assessment of goalies position…few more stick skills…repositioning, and then oh so calmly…..BACK OF THE NET and many man of the match votes as a result, well done JLL!
Dick of the day was awarded to LizLads for being about the only squad member not present, opting for a dirty weekend over in the Emerald Isle in preference to a run around on the pitch! Well, let this be a warning to you all!
Man of the match awarded to me, harry, for my goal, a strike that bulleted about half a foot above the ground into the corner of the goal, (if watching 6s catch-up, best viewed in slow motion for optimum effect, yes I was quite pleased with myself although do realize the flukey nature of said goal!) And a mention at this point must go out to Hawks for great vision and an awesome pass to the top of the D to allow me space to shoot! Whoop!
A special mention to our top supporter Floor, was great to have a dutch lilt on the side line shouting again!
All in all a fine win for the Ladies 6s, (5-0?5-1? Having a forgetful moment!) and a move back to our best. Great (big) team work!
