LATEST MATCH REPORT: LADIES 6TH XI - SEASON 09/10
---------------------------------------
On a surprisingly sunny, warm autumn’s afternoon we all arrived promptly at the new venue for what we hoped would be a winning game. After supporting the ladies 1s in action we had our usual tight team warm-up and rousing pre-match talk to focus us by our fabulous captain. The sidelines were brimming with our own little cheerleading squad of drunken mens 1s, headed up by Mrs Dickson, who was already swigging a can of cider as we pushed back!
From the off we had control of the play and dominated possession effectively, making accurate passes and well-timed runs. We used the left wing to drive the ball up and keep the pressure in their 25, and Coops skilfully (with her stick!) took the ball into the d for numerous shots. With rare moments in our defensive half (capitalised on by Woking who were then reluctant to get up off our gorgeous Dom after falling on her!) all the play was upfront. Bionic Steph was able to get on the end of some great passes from Gilo as the central pivot, and we had ample space on the right to spread the ball wide and use all the width through Harri. However, despite our relentless attacks the Woking goalkeeper kept out all our efforts and we were still nil-nil.
Meanwhile…. On the sidelines Dicko was limbering up for a good seeing to by Baby Dave, or so Will loudly announced, only to be told 10mins later that the nice lady on the sideline (…still quietly working her way through the can of cider) was actually Mrs Dickson!!! Needless to say his face soon resembled the colour of the Wanderer’s hoody!
With all our efforts focused on attacking a chance break by the oppo allowed an unmarked player in the d to tip the ball into the back of the net. Despite the frustration of being 1-0 down, we immediately picked up our heads, and although just back from injury, Dicko was streaking down the right wing, picking up forward balls and executing some great ball-stick skills. Yet more possession in their quarter was still blocked by the goalkeeper and after a few chances on goal the half-time whistle blew.
An encouraging and helpful team talk by Baby Dave and Will kept our spirits and determination high, and after more pressure upfront from the wings Harri slotted the ball in the back of the net! But Woking came back strong and two of their keys players started to string some attacking runs together. Ellie played a stormer at right back, intercepting balls and disrupting the oppo’s passing. Moggs and Lads also cleanly swept up any balls that got through and tracked the opposition wingers out of the game.
Great stamina from Gilo and Harri kept the movement through the mids, and patient and accurate passing resulted in a run of short corners. A ridiculously high stick from the Woking defence smacked our beautiful JLL in the face, and with a nasty cut and potential swelling to her nose she came off (luckily she had a caring admirer to look after her on the sidelines). The team rallied, and the passion and persistence remained high, but despite our best efforts we were still unable to clinch that winning goal with the final score being 1-1. However, we must have dazed Woking to a certain extent with our skill and teamwork, as they idiotically mistook us for the Wayfarers… really, we have a far better kit and way more class ;)
