LATEST MATCH REPORT: LADIES 6TH XI - SEASON 09/10
Saturday 19th September - Wanderers L6s vs Richmond L4s
---------------------------------------
An eventful start to the morning with Gilo and Laura only making it onto the platform in time for the train due to it’s 1 minute delay, followed by a pigeon unloading a bucket load of shit on Harve’s head, meant that some of the team were having a mare of a morning to say the least. The sun was strong, and with only 10 players (but managing to highjack the 1s’s goalie, (thanks Lindsay)…..legend!) the thought of a warm up was enough to intimidate most of the side. Gilo read out the team sheet and we found there were a few new combos to be tried and tested, however without any subs we were all happy to make the best of the situation. Richmond started the game with the pushback and after a few tentative tackles Wanderers gained possession. The midfield and backs worked well trying to find some space for the forwards to take the ball. Steph had some great runs up the left, only to be beaten back into the defensive half, Richmond were strong, but Wanderers could smell that they just need a break. The first goal arrived with the midfield finding Chrissy at right forward who drove the ball into the D and sent a cracking cross in front of the goalie for Steph to finish with a strong sweep. Spirits remained high, and the team worked well, crossing the ball, finding space, and working back if necessary. Names were put on balls and Richmond struggled to gain any possession. The second goal came shortly after with Shilli finding the back of the net. Richmond struggled to gain any possession and Wanderers remained strong, eventually once again finding the back of the net before the half time whistle with a fantastic shot from Steph. A half time talk suggested that we were not picking up their high player on a free hit which left her free to take the ball up without any defence from Wanderers. We knew that Richmond had subs, and with the mid day heat (similar to that of being in Barbados!), we starting to suffer. The second half was a different book all together. Still the team worked well, however it was the defence who had to find another gear. Richmond came back strong and despite the defence’s best efforts, came a run of penalty corners. Due to some exceptional goal keeping, and Richmond’s lack of being able to string together more than a few passes, we did not concede a goal. Legs were getting very tired, and tackling became very lazy, Shillito, Harvey and Ris all being pulled up for bad tackling. Eventually however it was Ris who took the brunt of the umpire’s annoyance, only to receive a green card. The good girl turned bad! Another break game for Wanderers when Coops intercepted from Richmond and drove the ball up the pitch, to pass it forwards to Harvs who managed to out run the defence to put a shot on goal, teaching Richmond’s goalie a lesson in keeping her legs closed! Wanderers 4, Richmond 0. All the players were now suffering and Wanderers could smell that victory was close, we just had to keep up the pace and refuse to concede a goal. As the game was drawing to a close we managed to break again and Steph connected perfectly will the ball from just inside the D to find the back of the net. The final whistle eventual blew and Wanderers celebrated a (practically) flawless game. 5-0, nice one!
