LATEST MATCH REPORT: LADIES 5TH XI

Ladies 5ths VS WW Hawks 18/11/06

The Ladies 5s are back in the game!

On a very rainy day the sun came out for Ladies 5s. An afternoon game, so everyone was well rested and hangover free (at least as far as I could tell they were!). During our warm up in Kennington Park a guy enjoying the beautiful sights of the park (?) joined us for some stretches. However, he soon noticed we had no interest in him and were more focused on the game ahead and continued his stroll in the park. We were really motivated to win this match against the Wayfarers Ladies 4s (for several reasons. but mainly because we were in joint 3rd place in the league with them ahead on goal difference) and we were well up for a battle to take third position and push them back into fourth.

The plan was to score within the first five minutes and to not be dominated by the opposition. I did not have to say this twice - from the first minute on we were all over them and they didn't have a chance. We had the first short corner within five minutes and in the rebound I pushed the ball towards the far post: 1-0. Near the end of the first half Lu scored another goal: 2-0.

During half time we enjoyed the delicious baked cakes from Mrs Moggy who came to support us. After a short team chat about our game so far and to prepare everyone for the second half everyone was back on the pitch and well up for continuing the battle. Dark clouds appeared, a few rain drops soon became a heavy shower. Forks of lightening shortly followed by a thunder made the umpires confer whether to stop the game for safety reasons. The girls were not having any of it and wanted to continue the game. And so we did.

The Wayfarers managed to get a short corner and to score a goal after it rebounded off of one of our defenders feet, making them think they had a chance of equalising in the next 15 minutes... yeah right.not if you are playing against Wanderers Ladies 5s! To show them they were wrong Lu scored from a short corner with a strong push into the goal after a neat slip to the right from Franny at the top of the D; final result: 3-1.

A great team effort, resulting in the Ladies 5s being back in joint 2nd place in the league (Richmond 4's lost putting us equal with them on points). Many thanks to Lil and Dee for helping us out, it was much appreciated. And congratulations to both Liz and Lu or being joined Player of The match - well played ladies! Feel free to join our group of supporters that is growing by the week, not only for our looks but also for our spectacular hockey skills: this Saturday 11:00am at BP
