LATEST MATCH REPORT: LADIES 1A XI

10/11/07

Wanderers 1As
0 v 4 Wayfarers 1s

Saturday began not so bright (in fact, almost dark) and early as we arrived at KP at some unearthly hour to take on local rivals Wayfarers. They turned up looking keen and with a coach. We went one better than that; not quite so keen but we had Jacqs AND her hangover!! We also had a Blackberry which added much clarity to the team talk when it came to who was playing where.

Hockey is a relatively simple game; 2 teams of 11 players run around a pitch chasing after a ball with sticks.  Unfortunately, we missed a key part of that description and decided to start the game with just 10 players on the field.  Of course this meant we did have one extra supporter which is always handy.

Anyway, by the time we had got our 11th player on the pitch, Wayfarers were already a goal up after a series of short corners weren’t quite cleared and the ball ended up in the back of the net.
Minutes later it was 0-2 as a free hit outside the D got the slightest of touches by a Wayfarers player and over the line it went.

As the half wore on we began to play with more composure and put some pressure on the opposition defence. Moments before half time, an awesome shot from the edge of the D went inches wide of the post.

Although we were two goals down, we were still optimistic we could get at least a point from the game and we started the 2nd half determined to do so. Disappointingly, determination didn’t equal goals scored and despite improved play and more possession it just wasn’t going to be our day. Wayfarers scored twice more to keep them top and give them, what I personally feel, was a slightly flattering victory!

Thanks to Kirsty for umpiring and Jacqs for sorting out the subbing for us.
